Okay, I'm a sometimes lurker on this forum.
This poll is really interesting to me. I compete in dog trials, and there is NO money in it. None. My dogs do well, and we win often. For example, this weekend, I spent over $300 on entries, drove 6 hours each way (with gas over $3 a gallon), stayed two nights in a hotel, ate well all weekend...and came home with an embroidered towel, a crate pad and 6 stainless steel bowls. Nowadays, I also give all my ribbons back to the trial committee so that they can reuse them. And I had a fabulous time...can't wait for the next one. I do this 1-2 times a month, during a similar "season" to BBQ.
My husband competes in the BBQ thing, but given a choice, I still would choose to head out to a dog trial. If you have your heart in the right place, BBQ competition has nothing to do with money. It's about good friends and good times. When I look back at my dog trials and I'm sure when my husband looks back at his BBQ contests, we remember the fun we had, and not the checks. I sure hope most people feel the same way.
