Well, to your point, you ARE absolutely right: if the KCBS outlawed payouts, the organization likely would cease to exist. But I'd hardly call it "real world." I changed it to "low payout" because a contest reducing their payout is possible, while the KCBS outlawing payouts completely just ain't gonna happen.
Here's real world, closer to the wording of the poll question: the Marshall, MO contest I mentioned is cancelled for 2008, after I think 12 years. One of the reasons for the cancellation is that it was an event to raise money for Marshall Rotary charities, and they've been losing money on it. If they said they'll put the contest on in 2008, same as it has been for the last dozen years, but the only awards would be trophies and ribbons, so that 100% of the entry fees and proceeds were going to their charities, we'd still cook there. It's a blast.
