We took our farthest trip so far to a contest last summer to Pine Bluff, 450 miles one way. Not long for some, but long for us. Cost to enter and gasoline to get there and back was quite a bit more than a normal contest for us.
Reasons we did it; 1-I wanted to meet some of the cooks and teams for the first time from the south and especially forum folks that I knew would be there, mission accomplished. 2- We knew the prize fund and payout structure would bring many of the best of the best teams there, and we enjoy playing with the big dogs, in hopes of being one some day. 3- Friends we already have from other teams would be there. 4- The payout structure provided that a single call could help pay for our costs, mission accomplished. 5- The opportunity to compete for a very large first place prize, we didn't get it, but we dang sure tried.
So, no, it ain't all about money by a long way, not for us anyway, but it sure has an effect. And, we'll probably go back again next year(to Hot Springs), to see our new and old friends, and to chase the end of the rainbow.
